Jackets topple Minutemen, 55-48

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets boys basketball team increased their scoring output in every quarter to stave off the Lexington Minutemen, a regional championship team a year ago, in the Jackets’ home and Ohio Cardinal Conference opener Friday, 55-48.

Allison Glass/News Mount Vernon High School students hyped up their winter sports teams during a pep assembly Friday afternoon. Both school choirs, under the direction of Marty Bell; the jazz band, under the direction of Megan Aubihl; and all of the school cheerleaders put on a massive show set to “The Greatest Show” from “The Greatest Showman,” which included a section of total darkness with flashlights. The performance was coordinated by Seniors Matt McComas, Lincoln Rainer, Jersie Monroe and Leslie Bell.

Footers poured for pillars at City Hall

The old side pillars at City Hall have been removed and the footers were poured Thursday for the new pillars, reported Jason Epley, assistant to the city engineer, at the mayor’s weekly press briefing Friday.

East Knox hosts Bulldog Brawl

In a battle for canine supremacy, the East Knox Bulldogs hosted Bloom-Carroll and Heath for the third-annual Bulldog Brawl Thursday, with wrestling action from the youth, junior high and high school levels, including senior night for the older Bulldogs.
