More than 2,000 students were in attendance as part of Champions of Character Day. The students heard from the Ohio State Highway Patrol about character, watched the men’s basketball game between the Cougars and the University of Northwestern Ohio and participated in several fun events during the day.

Joshua Morrison/News Thursday, Knox County Career Center students with building trades and landscape and design classes planted new trees behind the baseball field at Dan Emmett Park. Students dug the holes for the little swamp oak trees. The trees were purchased by the Shade Tree Commission. Sixty students planted almost three dozen trees in projects around the city of Mount Vernon. Graphic designer Paula Walton of the Mount Vernon News spent Friday afternoon transforming the newspaper offices into the Secret Gift Shop as part of the activities on Sunday’s Christmas Walk. From 1-5 p.m. on Sunday the newspaper offices will have handmade gifts that can be purchased by children for parents, siblings, relatives and friends. The parade will kick off downtown at 2:30 p.m.
