MOUNT VERNON — Even though it struggled offensively in the first half, the Mount Vernon girls basketball team was sticking with visiting West Holmes with a stingy defense.

But, a 13-0 run by the Knights in the second half finally broke the Jackets’ back and West Holmes ran off to a 45-30 Ohio Cardinal Conference victory Thursday at Mount Vernon.

“We just never got anything going in the second half,” said Mount Vernon coach Doug Savage. “We tried to get more scoring going, but I thought they (West Holmes) did a nice job defending us, especially Layne (Lepley). They made it tough on her to even get the ball.”

Lepley, the Jackets’ leading scorer (16.9 points per game) had torched the Knights for 32 points in the first meeting, and the Knights wanted to make sure she didn’t do it again. They were able to hold her to just 15 points on the evening.

She was still the only Jacket (2-12) to get going offensively, though, and it cost them a chance to knock off the Knights (9-6). MV made just 11 of 42 shots from the field and committed 25 turnovers. That’s usually not the recipe for success.

“The bottom line is we couldn’t score tonight,” Savage said. “In the first half, we had a lot of good scoring opportunities. They were point-blankers. We had to put them up through some hands and arms, but we should have been able to put more of them in. That’s why we struggled, only scoring 15 points in the half.”

The real trouble came in the second quarter when the Jackets scored just four points. They were able to hold the Knights to just six, though, and keep the game close.

But, a 16-7 third quarter spread by the Knights all but ended any hope of a Mount Vernon comeback.

Lepley added four rebounds to go along with her 15 points. Bryn Elliott added five points and two assists for the Jackets, while Macee Marcum had four points and eight rebounds. Stella Bainbridge checked in with three points, Celina Fritsch had two and Lexi Shaffer one.

West Holmes had a nice balanced attack offensively, led by Katie Sprang’s 12 points. Sprang also pulled down 14 rebounds, including six offensively. Paige Race checked in with 10 points and two assists, while Taylor Miller had nine points.

The Jackets will return to action Saturday, traveling to Mansfield Senior to take on the Tygers. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

In the JV contest, West Holmes was able to hold off the Jackets and post a 58-50 victory.
Mac Schlosser led the Jackets with 16 points. Addy Christopher added 10 and Bainbridge had eight.
