THORNVILLE — Robert T. Sage, 81, of Thornville, formerly of Fredericktown, Ohio, and Grand Forks, North Dakota, rests peacefully after a long battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Norman D. Sage, and parents, Clarence and Mabel Sage.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, and family; son, Thor Sage and family; and daughter, Heather Sage and family.

Bob graduated from Grand Forks Central High School and the University of North Dakota. Bob was an avid fisherman. He made many trips with friends and family over the years to various fishing destinations, including the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the Boundary Waters, Lake Erie and the Trent-Severn Waterway. When not fishing, he was often working on his boats and planning his next trip with friends.

He loved to tinker and was a do-it-yourself kind of guy. He took on any project from home remodel to car repair to installing the newest gadget on his boat. He was able to use his mechanical skills and his love of tools throughout his career at the Columbus Dispatch while working there to keep the printing presses running.

Bob was an easy going man and made friends everywhere he went. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and would often greet others with “Kan du huske gamle Norge?” (Can you remember Old Norway?). In his younger days, he would often wake his children by belting out his own rendition of the song, “Oh It’s Nice to Get Up in the Morning,” ending the song with “but it’s nicer to lie on your ass.” Above all, Bob was simply an extremely kind man, quick to show his appreciation for others. He will be greatly missed.
