MOUNT VERNON — In the event of sustained power outages, emergency responders will be announcing available shelter on Knox Alerts, local media and social media.

Knox County EMA Director Mark Maxwell said the Red Cross is prepared to open short-term “warming shelters” as well as overnight shelters should the need arise.

“We don’t like to announce where they will be ahead of time because (possible) locations may be in areas where the power is out,” Maxwell said. “If we can open a shelter that is not dependent on a back-up generator, we’d rather do that.”
If it is necessary to go to a shelter for a long period of time, Maxwell suggests bringing personal hygiene items and comfort items. Meals should be available at the shelter.
