When a drug habit leads to homelessness, it often takes a brush or two with law enforcement before the addict decides it is time to get clean.

In Knox County, we are lucky to have a court system that offers recovery options. Mount Vernon Municipal Court has a drug court underway, and Knox County Common Pleas Court is working to launch its own drug court this January.

Probation authorities in both courts are connected with agencies that can provide help with addiction as well as other barriers that get in the way of sobriety.

These courts need our support in their efforts. The road to recovery is long, with many bumps along the way. Addiction has a way of pulling people back in, even after long periods of sobriety. It can be frustrating to the recovering addict and their families. But as long as help is out there, there is hope.
