MOUNT VERNON — A Fredericktown man was caught in the act of stealing from a Mount Vernon garage, according to police.

Shaun J. Ward, 33, walked out of a garage he was allegedly burglarizing Dec. 15 right into the hands of police officers, according to Mount Vernon Police reports.

The incident occurred after officers were dispatched at approximately 2:50 a.m. to a detached garage in the 300 block of East Ohio Avenue. According to reports, Ward stepped out of the garage, dressed in black and wearing a headlamp. Ward told police he was “just sitting” in the garage and was there with a friend, according to reports.

The owner of the garage was contacted, and said Ward did not have his permission to be there. The garage owner identified several items belonging to him in a nearby vehicle that was licensed to a member of Ward’s family.

Ward was searched and found to be in possession of a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for meth, half of a pill, and drug paraphernalia. Ward told police the pill was Suboxone.

The light bulb in the garage appeared to have been partially unscrewed, “to conceal the movements of” Ward, according to reports.

No other individual was located. Items were found on the passenger seat of Ward’s vehicle, and it did not appear anyone was riding with Ward, according to reports.

Ward has been charged in Knox County Common Pleas Court with breaking and entering, aggravated possession of drugs, and possessing criminal tools, all fifth-degree felonies.
