MOUNT VERNON — What started as one conversation about the desire to see Knox Countians come together in worship, has blossomed in to a monthly community service.

Amy Hudson, a member of Vineyard Church in Mount Vernon, which serves as host to the monthly Community Praise & Worship events, explained that she felt a need last spring to bring Knox County churches together in worship to provide a place of unity. The first service was held in March and services, every fourth Saturday at 6:30 p.m., have been held monthly since, except for the upcoming Dec. 1 service, which has been combined for the months of November and December due to time constraints of the busy holiday season.

Each service sees a different worship team, sometimes from one area church, but often made up of individuals from various area churches, come together to lead songs and provide musical worship. The gatherings also typically feature a speaker, who shares testimony of how Jesus has impacted his or her life, and a call to prayer, especially for those who have identified with the testimony, Hudson explained. The monthly gatherings tend to last for about an hour, according to Hudson.

“It is a gathering of people wanting to see lives changed for themselves and for others in the community who know Christ can make a difference,” Hudson said. “It’s a really fun thing because there are so many churches coming together. That was the hope.”

On any given night, Hudson said, there are at least seven different churches represented at the events and through the planning process. Hudson noted that each event takes some coordination to be a success and explained that the has effort has been spread across area churches that are involved.

“[The planning] has happened very organically with the coming together of people who love the Lord,” Hudson said of the coordinating committee. “God is really in charge and we are just being obedient to what he is calling us to do with each of our own little gift sets.”

The next Community Praise & Worship event will be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Vineyard Church in Mount Vernon, 806 Harcourt Road. For more information about the Community Praise and Worship events visit Community Praise & Worship on Facebook.
