MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man was sentenced to prison for attacking another man outside a bar.
Shawn S. Mathews, 27, was sentenced Wednesday by Judge Richard Wetzel to 21 months in prison on one count of felonious assault.
The charges stems from Nov. 27, 2017, when Mathews was leaving a Mount Vernon bar with a woman. A group of men were concerned that Mathews was going to harm the woman, and followed.
Outside, Mathews attacked one of the men, causing multiple bone fractures.
Mathews’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Brandon Crunkilton, said Mathews thought he was going to be attacked by the men and “it turned into an over-reaction from there.”
Mathews, speaking in court Wednesday, said he “didn’t mean for this to happen.”
The victim did not submit a statement and no restitution was requested.
Also Wednesday, Tage A. Hiles, 33, Mount Vernon, was sentenced by Wetzel to two years probation on one count of possession of heroin.
The charge stems from April 13, when Hiles’ 10 block Columbus Road, Mount Vernon residence was served with a search warrant after a sale to a confidential informant.
A co-defendant, Kayla Schaade, 30, was sentenced to 20 months in prison on charges of complicity to trafficking in heroin and trafficking in heroin.
