MOUNT VERNON — Janet E. Shira, 84, of Eastgate Drive in Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, at Knox Community Hospital. She was born in Fredericktown, March 26, 1934, to the late Paul and Ulah (Simmons) Burgholder. Janet graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1952. March 12, 1954, she married R. Donald Shira. They spent 46 years together, until he passed away in 2000.

Janet loved her family and was an avid euchre player at the Station Break. She retired from American National Can.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie (Art Alves III) Peters and Nancy Van Houten of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Chris (Melissa Alexander) Peters of Scottsdale, Arizona, Anthony (Cassandra) Peters of Fredericktown, Nicholas (Brit) Van Houten of Mount Vernon, Jennifer (Brandon) Gross of Bloomfield, Andrew (Becke) Van Houten of Missouri, Paul (Camille) Peters of Arizona, Katrina (Jerry) Curran of Painesville, and Melissa Alves of Mount Vernon; great-grandchildren, Ren Peters, Anysten and Nicksen Van Houten, Braxton, Addison and Temperance Gross, Andrew and Johnathan Van Houten; sisters, Joyce Blackford of Mount Vernon, Jean (Larry) Benson of Atwater, Donna Burgholder of Fredericktown; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kathy Oliver; infant granddaughter; brothers, Harold and Wendell Burgholder; sons-in-law, Robert Peters, Neil Van Houten, and Joseph Oliver.

Janet Shira’s final wishes were no calling hours; therefore, the family will have a celebration of life Sunday, Nov. 25, at Connie Peters’ residence; 6301 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, from 1-3 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
