MOUNT VERNON — Dr. Hernando Posada, age 91, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, at Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Bogota, Colombia, the son of Roberto and Carmen (Contreras) Posada.
Dr. Posada practiced medicine for 60 years. He received his B.A. from the Colegio Americano (1947) and M.D. from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1954) in Bogota, Colombia. He did his pediatric training in Colombia and his passion for learning and pursuit of a brighter future brought him to the U.S. in 1958. Dr. Posada received a fellowship for post-doctoral studies at Harvard University, School of Public Health, and was an instructor at Harvard Medical School while working at Children’s Hospital in Boston. With an interest in pediatric pathology, Dr. Posada completed his pathology training in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Posada has worked at hospitals in numerous cities including, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Youngstown, Lynchburg, Virginia, Boston, Massachusettes, Baltimore, Maryland, and Patterson, New Jersey, and in 1974 he accepted the position as pathologist with Martin Memorial Hospital and moved his family to Mount Vernon. Dr. Posada loved Mount Vernon and he remained here in family practice until his retirement in 2013 after 39 years of helping his patients and the community of Mount Vernon.
He was an active member of Rotary, Knox County Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was influential in the Spanish Table at Kenyon College and Mount Vernon Nazarene College and was co-founder of both the Spanish Culture Club “ECO” in Columbus and the Adult Day Care Center of Knox County. Dr. Posada had a life-long curiosity for knowledge. His myriad of interests included art, history, archaeology, science and geography, and he traveled the world. He had a passion for books and his extensive personal library has been donated to the Knox County Public Library for others to enjoy. Dr. Posada will be sadly missed by his family, friends, co-workers and the many patients he has helped over the years.
He is survived by his former wife of 40 years Elvira Posada of Sarasota, Florida; children, Carmen (Michael) Posada DeSenne of Arlington, Virginia, and Hernando J. Posada of Dublin, Ohio; three grandchildren, Lorena Posada DeSenne, Alycia Posada and Lily Posada; and a sister, Leonor MacDonald of Rockville, Maryland.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three siblings, Roberto, Carlos and Cecilia Posada.
The family will observe private services. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Dr. Hernando Posada.
