COLUMBUS — Swimming and diving in a pool full of NCAA Division I competition, the Kenyon College Lords began Thursday the three-day Ohio State University Invitational at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The Invitational schedule for the day included five swimming events and one diving event. The Lords managed to rack up a team total of 200 points in those events and claimed the seventh-place spot in the eight-team field. The host Buckeyes jumped to the top of the leaderboard with 767 points. University of Kentucky and University of Notre Dame share second place, each with 571 points.
The first and last events of the evening finals session were relays. Kenyon’s top team in the opening 200-yard freestyle relay was comprised of David Fitch, Marcus Hong, Tommy Weiss and Weston Carpenter. They clocked in at 1:23.45 to take 15th place. At the end of the night, Fitch and Weiss paired with Nick Tong and Kieran Allsop to take 21st place with a time of 3:24.12 in the 400-yard medley relay.
In individual events, junior Connor Rumpit claimed 15th place in the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 4:30.10 and clipping the NCAA’s ‘B’ cut standard of 4:33.75. In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Grant Thompson was Kenyon fastest, placing 39th with a time of 1:53.45. In the next event, the 50-yard freestyle, Fitch also earned a 39th-place finish. His time was 21.22.
The only other event contested Thursday was on the one-meter diving board, where Kenyon senior Ryder Sammons earned a score of 208.05 and placed 17th.
The Lords will get back at it Friday morning with preliminary heats starting at 10 a.m. and final heats going off at 5 p.m.
