Serve the Burg rakes up a day of community service

Serve The Burg, a quarterly day of service helping community members and improving community spaces, will be held for the fall quarter Sunday, Nov. 18, starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers should report to the Centerburg Elementary School cafeteria, 207 S. Preston St. in Centerburg, at 9 a.m. to register for a service project and grab donuts fresh from The Burg Cafe and Bakery.

Dove: Best poets rational, yet introspective

The keynote speaker of the Kenyon Review Literary Festival, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rita Dove, told her captivated Rosse Hall audience Friday evening that one reason she began writing poems as a child was, “I dreamt up world where somebody like me could appear.”

Joshua Morrison/News Leaf pick-up in the city of Mount Vernon began on Monday. Leaves will be picked up through Nov. 30. Residents are reminded to rake their leaves to the curb and not out into the street.

Weather, equipment slows leaf pick up

Leaf collection got off to good start this week, Street Superintendent Tom Hinkle reported at the mayor’s weekly press briefing, despite delays due to some rain and cold, plus a broken piece of equipment that put one truck out of operation for part of a day.
