MOUNT VERNON — Communities will mark the Veterans Day over the weekend. Confirmed events include:

Mount Vernon

VFW Post 4027 will sponsor a Veterans Day commemoration Sunday, Nov. 11, on Public Square downtown. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., commemorating the end of World War I, which came at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, 100 years ago.

According to Post Commander Steve Lybarger, the keynote speaker will be Centerburg Schools Superintendent Mike Hebenthal, a retired Air Force major.

The Knox County Career Center Air Force Jr. ROTC will participate in the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to visit the VFW or the AMVETS posts for a free lunch.


Fredericktown American Legion will be holding Veterans Day services Saturday evening, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Waterford United Methodist Church, 20595 Waterford Road, Fredericktown. The speaker will be Rick Lyle of Mount Gilead.

The evening’s meal will be served by the Fredericktown United Methodist Church Ladies Group.


Danville American Legion Post #650 will be holding two Veterans Day services Friday, Nov. 9, at Danville Elementary School at 10 a.m., and at Danville High School at 12:20 p.m.

A community service will take place Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., at the memorial in the park in Danville. The speaker will be Kevin Henthorn, executive director of Knox County Veterans Services.
