UTICA — A private graveside service for Sue C. Helphrey, 83, of Utica, was held at South Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Helphrey passed away Oct. 29, 2018, at Country Court, Mount Vernon. She was born June 18, 1935, in Napoleon to the late Don and Vera (Johnson) Shockey.

Sue was a retired teacher at North Fork schools, a member of Utica Church of Christ and the Saturday Review Club. She was a Red Cross volunteer for the Utica Blood Drives and loved reading, gardening, birds and cooking.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie Helphrey; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel A. and Marianne Helphrey, III; granddaughters, Erin (Michael) Cochran, Katie (fiance, Dan Wajnryb) Helphrey all of Utica; three great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Jesse and Xander Cochran of Mount Vernon; cousin, Molly (Jim) Crawford of Napoleon; sister-in-law, Kay Pargeon of Utica; many nieces and nephews.

Sue is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel A. Helphrey Jr.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hervey Memorial Library, P.O. Box 512, Utica, OH 43080.

Law-Baker Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
