INDIANAPOLIS — Marcus Shellenbarger, a graduate of Mount Vernon High School, has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after helping Walsh University to its first victory of the season Saturday, 23-17, at Kentucky Wesleyan.

The defensive lineman finished the game with six tackles, 2.5 of which were quarterback sacks, and forced and recovered a fumble.

Shellenbarger’s fumble recovery helped secure the victory for the Cavaliers. In the final minute of the game, Kentucky Wesleyan had an opportunity for a game-winning drive. On the second play of that drive, the Panther quarterback rushed for 15 yards to the Walsh 37-yard line before Shellenbarger stripped the ball away and recovered the fumble.

Walsh now preps for a talented Ohio Dominican squad this Saturday. The two will gather under the lights at Tom Benson Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
