MOUNT VERNON – The Mount Gilead Post Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a three-vehicle, single-fatality crash that occurred on Friday on Ohio 229 in Clinton Township.

Cody Segner, 17, of Mount Vernon, was operating a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 truck, traveling eastbound on Ohio 229.

Phillip Vaughn, 20, of Fredericktown, was westbound on Ohio 229 driving a 2016 Ford with a passenger, Kathleen Weber, 20, of Cincinnati.

Joleen Eute, 16, of Sparta, also traveling westbound in a 2005 Hyundai.

Segner went off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossing the center line and sideswiping Vaughn, according to the patrol. While still out of control, Segner continued in the wrong lane, striking Eute on the passenger side. Vaughn continued off of the right side of Ohio 229.

Segner was flown to Grant Hospital from the scene and succumbed to his injuries, officials said. Vaughn and Weber were transported to Knox Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Eute was transported to KCH and then flown to Grant Hospital with incapacitating injuries.

Segner was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the patrol.

The Mount Gilead Post was assisted by Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Vernon Fire Department and Life-Flight.

The crash remains under investigation.
