CENTERBURG — The Centerburg Trojans had three golfers come in under 50 Wednesday at Wyandot Golf Course in a home match against Big Walnut, Fredericktown and Highland, picking up the win with a team score of 191, edging Big Walnut’s 197.

“I thought the girls played really well,” Centerburg coach Kathy Compton said. “Their goal was to finish with a great record and shoot well, of course. We had some scores in the 40s, which they really wanted to achieve, finishing the year in the 40s. I was really excited for them.”

Sophia Compton paced the Trojans with a 43 on the day, including three birdies. Olivia Gregory was not far behind at 46, while Violet Miller turned in a 49. Amaiah Gammell rounded out the scorers for Centerburg with a 53, while Cynthia Morris returned to the clubhouse with a 54.

Wednesday was both Senior Night and the final match of the regular season for the Trojans. Centerburg was scheduled to take on North Union today, but the match was canceled because of low numbers for North Union, making Wednesday the final competitive action before sectionals.

“It went from, ‘Oh, let’s just have fun. It’s senior night,’ to ‘Oh my gosh, it’s the last match,’” Compton said. “They talked and they were like, we can do this, let’s end with a bang — and we won.”

Fredericktown took third behind Centerburg and Big Walnut with a team score of 207. Makayla Frazier shot a 50 to pace the Freddies, while Krystal Ramey and Chloe Mealey both turned in a 51. Macey Neer recorded a 55.

Highland shot a 247 as a team, led by Savannah Fitzpatrick’s 56. Annabelle Zerby turned in a 58, while Kate Schmidt stroked a 59. Scots Liz Albertson (74) and Rachel Albertson (76) rounded out the Highland competitors.

Sidney Wright of Big Walnut captured medalist honors with a 40 on the day.

Fredericktown returns to action today against Licking Valley at Virtues Golf Course, teeing off at 4:30 p.m. Highland starts its postseason run Monday at 9 a.m. for sectional action at Blacklick Woods. Centerburg and Fredericktown both tee off Tuesday at 9 a.m. for the Division II Sectional at Bent Tree Golf Course.
