GALION — Although Northmor was a playoff team for the first time last season, it lost in the first round. The Golden Knights made up for some of that Friday with a 36-16 home win over Lucas, who has reached the postseason four straight times.

Conan Becker has been a demon running the ball for Northmor (3-0), but he added a bigger role in the passing game with two touchdowns receiving. He finished with 173 yards on 29 carries and 97 yards on only three catches for four total TDs. QB Hunter Mariotti completed 6 of 9 passes for 168 yards and three scores.

Cubs’ RB Jeb Grover continued his great play with 26 carries for 233 yards, but 107 of them were on two TD runs. QB Logan Niswander was limited to 4 of 7 for 27 yard, and was -30 on his 11 rushes. Niswander also threw two interceptions to end drives.

While the Knights’ defense kept all but Grover contained, Becker scored his first TD at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter, and Lucas blocked a punt deep in Northmor territory for a safety to close the period down, 7-2.

Mariotti and Becker provided big scoring plays in the second quarter with TD completions of 49 and 23 yards. The latter came shortly after Grover torched the Knights with a 50-yard TD run, but Northmor held a 21-10 lead at halftime.

Becker provided a big dagger to the Cubs’ hopes in the third quarter. Backed up to his own 8-yard line, Becker slashed off tackle to run 92 yards for a touchdown that made it 28-10 with 4:42 to play in the period. Although Grover rattled off a 57-yard score just 26 seconds later, Mariotti hit Gavin Ramos for a 41-yard TD at the 2:50 mark for an answer.

Northmor, which had 340 yards to 256 for Lucas, was effective in keeping drives alive by going 9 of 14 on third-down conversions.

Northmor will try to go to 4-0 in its first KMAC game of the season at winless Fredericktown next Friday.
