LUCAS — It’s usually Danville doing the shutting out, but on Friday the Lucas Cubs were able to turn the tables at home, downing the Blue Devils, 22-0.
Lucas (1-0) used a punishing ground game and a stingy defense to keep Danville (0-1) off the board. The Cubs gained 304 yards on 51 carries, and held the Blue Devils to 34 yards on 22 carries. New Danville QB Dalton David was limited to 5 of 15 for 59 yards and one interception, and the Blue Devils gained just 112 yards total to Lucas’s 348. The Cubs forced Danville into seven punts.
Nearly a quarter was played when Lucas scored the go-ahead touchdown, as Kaiden Thomas ran in from 26 yards at the 1:19 mark to give the Cubs a 6-0 lead.
Lucas took the score to 14-0 by halftime on Carson Hauger’s 2-yard rush and Thomas’s conversion run with 7:51 to play in the half.
While the Blue Devils had trouble getting its offense going, the Cubs scored its final TD in the third quarter. QB Logan Niswander hit Haugher for his only completion of the day, but it went for 44 yards and took the final score to 22-0.
