HOWARD — When a Bulldog gets backed into a corner, he’ll fight back — or she will, in this case.

The East Knox Bulldogs’ volleyball team came out flat-footed in the first two sets, but came alive in Set 3. It wasn’t quite enough, however, as the Bulldogs lost to the visiting Northridge Vikings, 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, in Tuesday night’s interconference season opener.

“They fight back,” said East Knox coach Allie Henthorn about her team. “That’s for sure. They came together as a team. They talked, moved and found their strengths and weaknesses tonight.”

For a while, it appeared that the Bulldogs would be mesmerized by the top spin on Northridge’s Mandy Shults’ serve. In the first set, the Vikings took a 19-17 lead with a 5-0 run, including a pair of Shults aces. The second set was tied at 3, when it was Shults’ turn to serve, once again. This time, she went on a tear, ringing up four aces and keeping the Bulldogs on their heels. The Vikings also got scores from Claire Shank, Sydney Koker and Claire Wasem. By the time Shults was done, Northridge held a commanding 11-3 lead on their way to a two sets to none lead.
