Joshua Morrison/News Gas and dust spew into the air on South Main Street near Adamson Street in Mount Vernon on Monday. A six-inch gas line was ruptured during the reconstruction project of the Parrott Street intersection. Some residents and businesses were evacuated as a precaution. 114 Columbia Gas customers were affected. Evacuees were allowed back into their homes Monday afternoon, but had their meters shut off while repairs could be done.

Gas break disrupts south end

A contractor working near Adamson Street on the Parrott Street/South Main Street reconstruction project, damaged a Columbia Gas line Monday, resulting in some evacuations and the temporary closing of several businesses.
