MOUNT VERNON — Alien memes, proposed merchandise and alien props have popped up around Knox County following a reported creature sighting.

Monday morning saw an “alien crossing” sign put up on Ohio 13, where a motorist reported seeing a slender, 7- to 8-feet tall creature bearing a very close resemblance to an extraterrestrial being July 31. Near the sign was a tie-dyed blow-up alien toy with the name “Timmy” written on it.

Comments on the News Facebook page accompanying the stories ranged from mockery to discussions on the possibility of life on other planets (one post kicked off a discussion as to whether or not the Bible proves there is life outside of Earth.) A woman posted that a member of her family saw the same thing 10 years ago on Sycamore Road; another poster said she felt the person who reported the sighting is being ridiculed.

A Facebook page titled The Vern Alien has photos of a man in an alien suit (while also wearing cowboy boots) at the alien crossing sign on Ohio 13. The page shares several alien memes and offers “a free probing” to “whoever takes the first picture of me.”
