MOUNT VERNON — Edward C. “Eddie” Porterfield of Mount Vernon passed away peacefully Friday morning, Aug. 10, 2018, at Brookdale Mount Vernon. He was born in Mount Vernon Dec. 27, 1944, to Thomas H. Porterfield Sr. and Mary Eleanor (Durbin) Porterfield.

He was a 1962 graduate of St. Vincent de Paul High School. He received a B.S. Degree in Business Administration in 1969 from Youngstown State University, an Associate Degree in Applied Science from The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute (Wooster) in 1977 and a B.S. Degree in Agriculture from The Ohio State University in 1982. Ed honorably served in the United States Army. He was a Viet Nam veteran and was awarded The Bronze Star Medal.

Ed had a lifelong love of golf from his days as a caddie at the Mount Vernon Country Club. He was an accomplished golfer and had recorded two holes in one. He had a successful career as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent in Maryland and Virginia and was a member of Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Patricia Gresko and Margaret (Peggy) Penkhus; and brothers, Thomas H. Porterfield Jr. and Bradford P. Porterfield. Additionally, he was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Matthew Gresko and Rodger Drabick; niece, Peggy Gresko; and great-nephew, Jet Stoner.

He is survived by his brothers, David J. Porterfield C.S.C. of South Bend, Indiana, Roger Jon Porterfield of Mount Vernon; sisters, Karen E. Drabick of Columbia, Maryland, Mary E. Stoner of Cambridge; and sister-in-law, Eileen Porterfield of Arlington, Virginia. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. The round table of world problem solvers at Hiawatha Golf Course has lost their Tuesday morning donut supplier.

In accordance with Ed’s wishes the family will observe a private burial service at a future date.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ed’s name to Hospice of Knox County 17700 Coshocton Road Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
