MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon was well represented Thursday at the 13th annual Dan Emmett Music and Arts Festival cheer competition, with the middle school and high school programs both picking up the win.

For the middle school program, it was a surprising win, according to coach Trudy Debolt. The Jackets had never performed during a competition in front of a crowd.

“Only four of the girls have ever cheered in front of a crowd. We had six brand-new girls and this is the first time they have ever performed,” Debolt said. “I expected third place. We’ve worked really hard and I’m completely surprised and amazed by how they did.”

Mount Vernon picked up the top spot. Mount Gilead snagged second, while East Knox took third.

“We have a very diverse squad, and to be able to see them all be able to pull the cheers together, even though they have such varying abilities, was incredible,” Debolt said of what she thought set her team apart.
