MOUNT VERNON — A local author, firefighter and paramedic, and now poet, is releasing his first book of poetry, “Forever I Will Be,” next week.

Mount Vernon native Jared McCann said his career as a poet started his sophomore and junior years at Mount Vernon High School when he entered an online poetry contest. Some of those poems, since revisited by McCann, will be included in a collection of around 70 poems that cover a wide range of topics from romance to every day life. Throughout the process of writing his fiction novels starting in 2014 and 2015, McCann said he would “start and stop” writing short poems. His wife, Debi, read them and encouraged him to make them into a book.
