MOUNT VERNON — J. Peter (Pete) Mickley passed away of cancer on June 14, 2018, in Gilbert, Arizona. Pete was born in Mount Vernon on June 18, 1943. He graduated from St. Vincent de Paul High School with scholastic and athletic distinctions. He received a degree from Findlay University where he also played collegiate football. After college Pete became an officer in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was honored for his courageous service navigating boats which delivered troops and supplies along the treacherous rivers from the port city of Da Nang. Following the war, he was a management executive with the Allstate Corporation until his retirement.

Pete is survived by his beloved wife, Mia; sons, Brent Mickley (Susanne) and Justin Mickley; daughter, Heather Bucknell; mother, Julia (Heaton) Mickley; sisters, Nan Van Heyde (Steve), Shirley Wall (Tony), Debbie McMahon and Rebecca Mickley; grandson, John Mickley; nieces, Stephanie Van Heyde Phillips (Jason) and Lily Watkins; and nephews, Jason McMahon, Peter Van Heyde (Brandy), Ben Watkins and Taylor Wall (Mollie).

Passing prior to Pete were his father, John E. Mickley (longtime Knox County Treasurer); sister, Margie Watkins (David); and nephew, Ian Van Heyde.
There will be a Military Honors Ceremony followed by a Celebration of Pete’s Life held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Apple Valley Golf Clubhouse. Family and friends are invited to attend.
