The Cincinnati Zoo will host a launch party Tuesday for the children’s book about Fiona the Hippo. Illustrator for the book is Knox County resident Richard Cowdrey.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden invites children of all ages to the launch party of a book about its most famous resident, Fiona the hippo, Tuesday. Published by Zonderkidz, the children’s division of Zondervan, Fiona the Hippo features charming artwork from New York Times bestselling illustrator and Cincinnati native, Richard Cowdrey.

“Fiona’s superstar status has made her an incredible ambassador for her species. She has inspired and captivated millions of viewers worldwide and we are thrilled to celebrate the book release with friends of Fiona,” commented Chad Yelton, vice president of marketing and communications, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

The book tells the story of how Fiona, born prematurely and not expected to live, defied odds and inspired millions through her spunk and determination. With the help of her caregivers at the zoo, Fiona began to thrive and became a happy, healthy hippopotamus. The beautiful picture book follows Fiona and her friends at the zoo as she is introduced to the world in a whimsical and inspiring tale of perseverance and friendship.

The launch party will begin at 10 a.m., with a drawing demonstration by the illustrator, followed by a book signing in the Zoo Shop at 11 a.m., and will finish with an ice cream party at 1 p.m., at Hippo Cove. The events are free and open to Zoo guests that day.

The CBS Morning Show is expected to feature the event Tuesday morning.

Fiona the Hippo is available for pre-order online and will be in stores Tuesday.
