MOUNT VERNON — Join the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon tomorrow, Saturday Aug. 4, 2018, for its annual Chicken Barbecue fundraiser in front of Kroger.

The carryout meal will include a half chicken, baked beans, chips, a McDonald’s ice cream coupon and a beverage, according to Kiwanis President-elect Kathy White who said she will be at the event wearing a chicken costume.
Meals will start being served around 11 a.m. or 11:30 a.m., White said, and will be available until they are sold out, which White expects to be around 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the event and discounted pre-sale tickets can be ordered through the end of today by calling White directly at 740-504-7472.

Fifty to 60 volunteers from Kiwanis will serve throughout the day cooking and serving 1,400 chickens.

White noted that the barbecue, a long-standing tradition for the club, is one of the largest fundraisers that Kiwanis does all year. The club is aiming to raise more than $10,000, White said.

Kiwanis focuses mostly on helping the youth of Knox County and has used the funds raised at past barbecues to fund various projects around Knox County, most recently including donations to the new 4-H building being built which at the new Natural Resources Area on the fairgrounds, an all-inclusive playground to be built at Memorial Park and to various other service projects that Kiwanis helps year after year.
