MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon woman is charged with destroying evidence while inside a police cruiser.

Amanda R. Berry, 31, Mount Vernon, was indicted Monday by the grand jury on charges of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony; aggravated possession of drugs, a second-degree felony; and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

According to Assistant Knox County Prosecuting Attorney David Merrell, Berry was in a vehicle stopped for a traffic offense July 20. Berry indicated she had drugs in her possession, and a tin containing a crystal-like substance believed to be meth was located on her person, Merrell said. Berry was placed in a police cruiser where it is believed she “destroyed a significant amount” of drugs by crushing it in her hands, Merrell said, evidenced by white powder on Berry’s fingers and shards and powder found on the floor of the cruiser.
