MOUNT VERNON — Complication in the sewer project in Green Alley may push the completion of the sewer work in Spice and Green alleys back to where East High Street might still be closed for the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival, Aug. 9-12.

City Engineer Brian Ball said the contractor will work to have the street reopened for the festival.

According to Ball and Mayor Richard Mavis, the excavation of the Green Alley line revealed that a wet spot had developed because of one of the breaks in the line and it had to be excavated so there would be a solid base for the line. It was also found that the laterals didn’t connect to the main line properly as there was not enough slope for good flow, forcing the contractor to lower the main line.

Ball said Green Alley should be completed by Friday, and the contractor can move to Spice Alley Monday.
Meanwhile, today through Monday, Smith Paving will be working on curbs and handicapped ramps starting at the High Street bridge and working east, Ball said. Kokosing Construction will then mill and pave on High Street, but will not do Public Square until after the festival. Kokosing will start as early as Friday, or as late as the 30th.
