MOUNT VERNON — Four residents addressed Mount Vernon City Council Monday on issues ranging from driving golf carts on city streets to naming a ball field after a fallen hero and the level of construction noise early in the morning.

Resident Kyle Theibert requested council’s permission to name Phillips Park Field A after Spec. Ryan A. Martin. Theibert and Martin played baseball together on the field in the early 1990s, Theibert said. Martin was killed Aug. 22, 2004, in Iraq as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a 2000 graduate of Mount Vernon High School.

Council President Bruce Hawkins said he believes the field was already named the Paul Slaughter Memorial Field. Theibert said Field B would be acceptable or even a field at Dan Emmett park which is named after former News Sports Editor Spiv Harris.
