MOUNT VERNON — A Bellville man was sentenced in Knox County Common Pleas Court after admitting to smuggling drugs inside the Knox County Jail in a Bible.

Jayme V. Friend, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse onto the grounds of a detention facility. In exchange for Friend’s guilty plea, a second charge of illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse onto the grounds of a detention facility was dismissed.

The charge stems from Nov. 6, 2017, when Friend provided a female inmate of the Knox County Jail with a small Bible. According to Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Christine Williams, concealed inside the Bible were three Suboxone strips, which the female inmate is believed to have “consumed before the discovery (of the conveyance of drugs) was made.”

Wetzel ordered a presentence investigation and scheduled sentencing for Aug. 31.
