CAMBRIDGE – Mount Vernon Black, a 10-and-under Little League All-star team, piled up 16 runs, including seven runs in the sixth inning, to sneak by Guernsey County Green Wednesday, 16-12, and advance in the District 5 Tournament.

Mount Vernon started strong out of the gates in the team’s first game of the tournament after a first-round bye. Leadoff hitter Vincent Kiser got on base with a single and came around to score in the inning, putting the team up 1-0. Guernsey County was kept to only four at-bats in the bottom of the frame, keeping the Black edge.

Expanding on its lead, Mount Vernon racked up another five runs in the second. Griffin Beach, Chase Sheppard, Caleb Youngman, Lane Severns and Kiser all scored in the frame as the team batted around the order. Sheppard drew a walk, while the rest that scored in the second reached base on a hit. Again in the bottom half of the inning, Green was limited to four at-bats, which kept the score at 6-0.
