CAMBRIDGE — The Mount Vernon Orange 10-and-under All-Stars took the lead with five runs in the third inning in the 9-10 District 5 Little League tournament in Cambridge Tuesday, but Guernsey County Green scored seven times in the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Orange, 13-10.

Mount Vernon led off the game with a single run in the first. Dammon Wolfe reached base with two outs, and two batters later Jaycob Vernon drove in the game’s first run for a 1-0 lead.

A one-out solo home run tied the game for Guernsey County in the bottom of the inning, and it took the lead, 2-1, on a run-scoring double.

Orange took the lead again with three runs in the second. Two straight singles started things off, and a walk loaded the bases. Leadoff hitter Ethan Hurlow reached base to score two runs, and he later scored on a two-out hit by Wolfe to make it 4-2.

Guernsey County walked, leading off its half of the frame, and three straight one-out singles allowed two more runs to score, tying the game at 4 after two.

But the All-Stars scored again in the third, using a five-run inning to take its largest lead of the game, 9-4. Jaycob Vernon hit a one-out triple before scoring the go-ahead run, and two other batters reached base before Braydon Vernon drove them in with a two-run double. Hurlow then doubled home Braydon Vernon before stealing home with the fifth run of the frame.

In its half of the third, Guernsey County had two batters reach base, the latter with two outs, and they both came around to score, cutting the deficit to 9-7.

Guernsey County had more in store in the fourth and fifth innings. Holding the All-Stars scoreless in those innings, Guernsey County blasted a home run and a triple in its first three at-bats with a hit batter in between, and two runs scored on a single. A double plated two more, and another base hit left Green with the lead, 11-9.

Guernsey County scored twice more in the fifth on a bases-loaded double, leaving Orange down 13-9 with one inning left. Mount Vernon got a one-out walk in the sixth from Bryce Kreager, and Tyce Davidson’s double scored him for a 13-10 score. A hit batter and a walk left the bases juiced with two outs, but Guernsey County induced a strikeout to end the game.

Jaycob Vernon struck out three in the start, and Kreager had one strikeout in relief. Wolfe also fanned one, and Austin May finished the game by striking out three. Davidson also pitched in the game.

At the plate, Jaycob Vernon bashed a triple, double and single; and Hurlow Davidson and Vincent Menapace each singled twice. Aaron Heyman ripped a double, and Wolfe and May each finished with a single.

Mount Vernon fell to the consolation bracket, and will play the loser of the Cambridge/Guernsey County Pink game tonight at 8 p.m.
