MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon Middle School football players are spending this week to brush up on their gridiron skills and learn the basics of the sport before heading into official practices later this fall.

“It’s pretty much a fundamental camp, trying to introduce the kids a little bit to what the offense and defensive schemes are going to be like,” eight-grade coach Bryan Donaldson said. “Alignment, assignment and basic fundamentals are the focus this week.”

The camp is open to prospective Mount Vernon middle schoolers who have an interest in playing football this fall, either on the seventh or eighth grade teams. Of the more than 30 campers this week, several have played football before, but some are using the camp to learn the basics and decide if they want to play this fall.
