MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man scheduled to plead guilty to charges brought in a fatal overdose asked Friday to take his case to trial.

Dennis Banbury, 39, was scheduled to plead guilty in Knox County Common Pleas Court to charges that allege he provided meth laced with fentanyl to Warren Taylor June 3, 2017, while he and Taylor were incarcerated at the Knox County Jail. Taylor died from a fatal overdose the same day.

Banbury, speaking in court Friday, told Judge Richard Wetzel he wanted a new attorney. Banbury said his attorney, Rolf Whitney, does not have his best interests at heart and “hasn’t come to see me for 10 months.”

Wetzel denied Banbury’s request, stating that he feels Whitney’s representation of Banbury has been more than adequate.
