MOUNT VERNON — It seems only yesterday that summer began, but now it is already time, once again, for the Knox County Fair.

The fairgrounds will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, July 22, to Saturday, July 28. As in past years, tickets will be available at walk-up ticket booths for purchase. Tickets are also available at First-Knox National Bank branches. This year the Fair Board will not be offering “free Saturdays” in which the admission and ride tickets were free. According to Fair Board Vice President Dustin Beheler this change was made following the loss of a sponsor.

This year, those wishing to pay with a card will not be a problem for entry tickets, according to Beheler. While cash is still the only accepted form of payment for vendors and entry fees, an ATM will be set up by the entry booths to provide forgetful or unaware attendees with a back-up plan.

The Friday night concert is back on the schedule this year with the Nashville based country/rock band, Mustang Sally (MSB) and opening act, local singer/songwriter Olivia Kight. MSB was chosen according to Beheler because of the wide variety of songs they perform that will be engaging to a diverse crowd. They “take particular pride in writing songs that ‘tell it like it is’ for women” according to the group’s website and have shared stages with Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Gretchen Wilson and Blake Shelton.

Olivia Kight, a Mount Vernon native will be opening the show accompanied by her father, Brian Kight, and uncle, Craig Kight. Kight will be performing several original songs including “Because He Met Me” and her newest single “Heartbreak” along with a variety of cover songs that, Kight said, the crowd will be able to sing along with. Kight will take the stage at 6 p.m. Friday. Track seating will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Beheler explained that the Friday night concert was not held in 2017 because past gate sale history had shown that Friday night attendance was dwindling. However, feedback indicated that the concert was missed in 2017 which encouraged the Fair Board to bring it back.

All events, and event budgets, that are scheduled are based on feedback from past years and social media as well as gate sales from past years.

Another slight tweak to the schedule this year is the Figure 8 races Thursday evening. Following the Demolition Derby, the Figure 8 races will feature cars and trucks instead of busses. This change, Beheler said, is a result of the high cost for participants bringing in busses.

The county favorite Rough Truck and side by side racing as well as longest jump will fill the Wednesday evening schedule and dirt drag racing and motocross racing will fill the Tuesday night schedule. Harness racing is scheduled for Monday evening as well as Tuesday at noon. Several tractor and truck and tractor pulls are planned for the week including the NTPA and Buckeye Power Productions pulls Sunday, an antique tractor pull scheduled for Thursday and the O.S.T.P.A. truck and tractor pull on two tracks Saturday.

Fair royalty will be crowned Sunday with the Jr. Fair King & Queen judging at 11 a.m. and the 26th Annual Little Miss Knox County starting at 2 p.m.

4-H members will also see a slight change in their fair experiences with shorter wait times thanks to the addition of electronic tagging and new scales that will speed up the check-in process.

Beheler explained that planning for the fair takes the 21-member Fair Board the whole year to plan, in addition to two full-time employees of the county and director to make sure the grounds are ready each year. Without these people and the community sponsors who help fund the projects, “there is no fair” Beheler said.
