MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon woman was sentenced Tuesday on three counts of animal cruelty in Mount Vernon Municipal Court, but a local animal protection advocacy group says the punishment was not enough.

According to court documents, the Knox County Animal Shelter was notified two dogs were found dead in March in a residence previously rented by Clorisha Arndt, 25, in the 200 block of East Burgess Street. Arndt vacated the property in December 2017, but the bodies were not discovered until new tenants went to clean the home in March.

When Officer Krista Douglas went to investigate, the bodies of three dogs were discovered in the same bedroom. In her report, Douglas describes each of the dogs as “mummified.” She also noted that she “had to wear painter’s masks because of the house’s odors” while she took photos of the scene and collected the dogs’ remains.
