CARROLLTON — East Knox FFA member Sean Magers recently attended the six-day state forestry camp at FFA Camp Muskingum near Carrollton. He was among 97 high school students from across the state of Ohio who participated in this event.
Students were instructed by over 30 resource specialists from across the state and had classes in dendrology, ecology, tree climbing, forest measurements, silviculture, wildlife management, forest products and forest resource management. Participants learned the principles of the forestry industry including measuring DBH and logs of trees, identifying trees, calculating stumpage value and using forestry tools. Along with the technical knowledge, participants learned teamwork and cooperation skills, took nature hikes and participated in recreational activities.
The week was concluded with a test, graduation ceremony and naming of the top four students of the camp who will be receiving scholarships to The Ohio State University, Hocking College and Ohio University. The week at state forestry camp was sponsored by a scholarship from the Knox Soil and Water Conservation District.
