MOUNT VERNON — Law enforcement checked the area of Ariel-Foundation Park early this morning after receiving a report of a suicidal subject.

Knox County Sheriff David Shaffer said deputies and Mount Vernon Police did not locate anyone at the park. The officers were dispatched to the park at 12:12 a.m. after a male subject was reported to be suicidal in a call transferred from Franklin County. The subject was reported to be in the area of the Rastin Tower, Shaffer said.

A deputy reported hearing one or two shots upon arrival at the park, Shaffer said. The officers “checked the park and walked around the area but were unable to locate anyone,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer said cell phone tracking was attempted to locate the cell phone to the area, but was not successful.

The Rastin Tower was the site of an apparent suicide June 20, when a Newark man bypassed several safety measures, climbed an iron rung ladder that goes to the top of the tower, then jumped or fell to his death.
