MOUNT VERNON – The 12-and-Under Little League All-Star baseball team looks for a strong home showing when it hosts the District 5 Tournament, kicking off next week.

“Our expectation is to win this district,” coach Rich Schuman said. “Anything less than that is going to be a total disappointment. The kids know that and the staff knows that. We are here to win.”

This summer is the first time Schuman will be coaching a local all-star team for the postseason.

Although he is new to the postseason, the coach is not new to a majority of his players. Nine of the 13 players named to the all-star roster played for Schuman on the Orange Sox this summer.

“We’ve got a little bit of a competitive environment going on right now, which is good,” Schuman said of his roster in the early stages of practice. “It gets these kids to earn their keep a little bit and we’ll go from there. We talked about just bringing some passion, energy, focus and being competitive any time you step between the lines.”
