MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man has been charged with allegedly setting up a meeting for sex with a 12-year-old girl.

Kody M. Bergs, 19, was indicted by the July 2 grand jury on charges of attempted rape, a first-degree felony; and importuning, a third-degree felony. The charges stem from June 20, when Bergs arranged to meet with the girl through Facebook at a Mount Vernon park, Knox County Prosecuting Attorney Chip McConville said. The girl’s parents became aware of the Facebook messages and wrote back to Bergs, telling him to stop, McConville said.

When Bergs set the June 20 meeting, McConville said, the parents contacted the police. Bergs showed up at the meeting place, and was met by police, McConville said.
