GAMBIER — Trees, Engine #1 (a 1955 fire truck) and the future traffic study were main topics at Monday night’s Village of Gambier council meeting.

Jerry Kelly, chair of the Gambier Shade Tree Commission, spoke during the open session about the possibilities of creating a new tree ordinance in order to protect the integrity of Gambier’s woodland areas. Mayor Kachen Kimmell was also involved in the proposal of a new ordinance to be drafted and proposed at a future meeting.

The ordinance would aim to minimize the amount of “specimen trees,” as Kelly called them — meaning adult, healthy trees of certain species that aren’t the majority tree of an area, but still add to the diversity of the village — that villagers can remove from their properties for the sole purpose of profit.
