McClain sings her way to karaoke title at USA Days
CENTERBURG — Allison McClain’s preferred singing venue is a toss-up between the car and the shower, but definitely not in front of a live audience.
While belting out Adele’s “When we Were Young” to take first place in the Centerburg Heart of Ohio USA Days Karaoke contest, McClain was fighting through more than the high and low notes. The Ashley resident has Aspergers Snydrome and getting in front of an audience is particularly difficult for her.
“Getting up in front of people and singing, it kind of freaks me out,” McClain said.
McClain said she doesn’t usually sing when there’s a Karaoke machine around or even when she’s in church. Making Saturday even more difficult was the fact that her mother, Tracey Hanna, was also competing in the karaoke contest.
“She doesn’t like to compete when I’m in it,” Hanna, who took fifth place, said. “I dragged her out last year and had to drag her back this year.”
McClain said she didn’t really think she was going to win. However, hitting the high notes, she thought she had a good chance.
