MOUNT VERNON — A Martinsburg man charged with striking his girlfriend in the mouth with a handgun took the witness stand in his own defense Wednesday in the second day of a jury trial.

Randy J. VanWinkle, 41, testified in Knox County Common Pleas Court that his girlfriend pinned him to their bed and angrily confronted him before threatening to shoot him in his sleep. VanWinkle testified that he held a .45 caliber handgun out sideways at arm’s length between the two of them. The girlfriend struck her face against it, then said, “yeah … you’re going to jail,” VanWinkle testified.

The girlfriend, who also testified Wednesday, said VanWinkle hit her with the butt of the gun, and that she never saw it coming.
