52 Special Olympians to participate at OSU

MOUNT VERNON — More than 50 Knox County athletes will get the opportunity of a lifetime this weekend — participating in a state competition.

Fifty-two Knox Countians are heading to Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium beginning today for the state Special Olympics.

“It’s amazing seeing all these athletes participate — it warms your heart to see them out there and doing their thing,” said Linda Kerr, Knox County Special Olympics coordinator. “I’m sure the athletes feel the same way. They love it.”

The athletes will participate in events ranging from running to throwing a softball or javelin to bowling. Each athlete sill have an opportunity to participate in two events during the competition.

The track portion includes both 50- and 100-meter running races, as well as 25-, 50- and 100-meter walking races. The field events include the softball throw or throwing the javelin. Sixteen Knox Countians will also participate in the bowling events, which will be held at Sawmill Lanes in Dublin.
