MOUNT VERNON — Summer has just officially arrived and it’s already hot and muggy. To help residents keep cool, the Mount Vernon Fire Department is conducting its annual fan drive.

Fire Chief Chad Christopher said the department is accepting new fans, which they will turn over to Interchurch Social Services to distribute, with priority given to the elderly and homes with children.

“We’ve done this in the past, but we decided to get a little more organized and get the word out this year,” Christopher said.

“Standard box fans are preferred, but any fan is good,” he added, also noting that they cannot accept used fans for liability reasons.

Just take the fans to the fire station, 200 East Gambier Street.

The chief also added that people should keep an eye on the elderly or those who have health problems.
