MOUNT VERNON — Developers planning to remodel the old Middle School on North Mulberry Street as an apartment complex withdrew their request for rezoning and instead will pursue conditional use permits as needed.

Jason and Larry Gunsorek of New Albany had requested the rezoning of the school property as multi-family residential from the current Neighborhood Commercial. They plan development of 48 to 52 “high end” apartments, most two- and three-bedroom, plus possible conversion of the gym into a public fitness facility and other space as office or commercial property.

Safety-Service Director Joel Daniels pointed out that the commercial space would not be permitted in an R-3 zone, but that residences could be allowed in Neighborhood Commercial with conditional use permits.
