MOUNT VERNON — In an otherwise standard board of education meeting Monday evening, the Mount Vernon City Schools board heard from MVHS art teacher Deanna Badger and community members regarding a need for an additional full-time art teacher.

Badger cited statistics from the latest round of class scheduling for the increased emphasis on art classes. She explained that for the first time in her 14 years in the district, the majority of the incoming freshman class has been blocked from scheduling art classes, due to an increased demand of upperclassmen needing to fulfill the art requirement and the department only being able to accommodate a set number of classes. Only one incoming freshman was successfully able to schedule an art class, she said.

There are currently two art teachers at the high school, teaching five full-time classes a piece. Badger explained that with the number of students that were blocked out of scheduling art classes, they would have had 15 full-time art classes.
